For the online world, having a strong LinkedIn profile can open up a world of new opportunities to you. No matter what industry you’re in, whether you’re an apprentice starting out or have been in the trade industry for years, having a good LinkedIn profile can help build your network and also open up new possibilities within your career.

So if you’ve been neglecting your LinkedIn profile, it’s time to give it a clean up (maybe even just create one from scratch) and discover the world of possibilities behind it.

Set up a profile

If you haven’t already set up a profile, it’s time to create your page. Head to LinkedIn.com and start your account, it’s free to set up and you only need some basic information to kick it off.

Make sure you get a professional looking headshot, which can simply be making sure you’re dressed neatly. All you need to do is simply get a colleague to take a photo of you in natural light on your iPhone. It doesn’t need to be studio quality, but make sure it doesn’t look like you’ve just taken a selfie.

Connect!

Once your profile is set up, it’s time to begin connecting. There’s no point in having an account that’s sitting there empty and idle. In the search bar – add people who you have previously worked with, along with friends and family.

LinkedIn Profile and bio

Take a leaf out of other peoples books and look at how they write and update their bio. It’s not an About Me section of what you like to do on the weekend, it’s more looking at your professional expertise. Think of how you would sum up your experience on your resume and channel that information into your profile.

Basically, LinkedIn is an online version of your resume. It’s a great tool for potential employers to find you and also a great way to network with like-minded people within your industry.

References

Build up your profile and authority with some solid LinkedIn references from past colleagues. There are two elements within this – Recommendations and Endorsements. This means that former bosses and clients can either write a reference or comment on how they enjoyed working with you or endorse particular skills that you have signified in the featured skills section.

The ask to be recommended option is the best way to get people to recommend you, which will boost your presence and credibility.

Join groups

Just like Facebook, on LinkedIn within the gas and electrical industry, there are a number of active groups that can help keep you up to date about changes within the industry. These are great to become a part of and have your voice heard. Join them and use them as a tool to connect with those around you.

Your past work

Add examples of your past work and highlight projects that you’ve worked on and experience you have. Anything that helps you stand out from those in your industry.  If you’ve completed any training courses or qualifications, these are important to keep up to date on your LinkedIn profile so that you can show that you’re keeping current within your industry.
